As the new year dawns, I offer some wishes for creating a brighter workplace, a couple of tips that might help them come true and a recommended read, my favorite for the year.
1. Balance. It strikes me that we are plagued by imbalance everywhere in the workplace. Whether it is gender inequality, talent scarcity or at an individual level, work/life balance, we are out of kilter. Balance is a driving force for every living organism and deprived of it we are stressed, compromised and dis-eased. My wish is that you confront the causes of imbalance in your life and your workplace in 2013 and regain the homeostasis essential for harmony and wellbeing.
2. Inspiration. My observation is that 2012 has been predominated by an emphasis on survival. People have lost their jobs, businesses shut down or re-sized, and everywhere ‘back to basics’ has been the mantra. This has often meant foregoing vision for minimalism. My wish for 2013 is for the renaissance of courage and the strength necessary to follow through on the big ideas, the risky plays and inspired innovation.
3. Real change. The Cloud, mobile devices, social networking, the internet of things, big data, stem cell research, robotics and neuroscience are all at the cusp of taking us to a fantastic new world. Yet so many individuals and organizations remain shackled by legacy mindsets, habits, systems and processes that quash the exuberance with which we should be approaching them. My wish is that 2013 marks the tipping point that catapults us to the next level of the human experience and we let go of the reigns holding us back. Real change in organizations will come with minds that can grasp the future, leverage the present and respect the past.
