Self-Publishing Goes from ‘Vain’ to Pop

Just like how the advent of digital music has made music more accessible to everyone, self-publishing has made it simpler for every aspiring writer to become an author.

The industry has grown by leaps and bounds, with reportedly over 250,000 self-published books hitting the shelves in 2011. Kevin Weiss, CEO of Indiana-based Author Solutions, says, “Vanity is no longer vanity,” referring to the infamous “vanity publishing” tagged to self-publication. The company caters to writers who choose to take the non-traditional publishing road. The Globe and Mail columnist John Barber talks to Weiss and takes a look at the lucrative industry.
